Meet The Lucas Oil Speedway Staff: Gift Shop Manager London Enjoys Helping Fans Take Home A Memory
WHEATLAND, Missouri (March 12, 2019) - Karmin London wants fans to take home a memory from Lucas Oil Speedway.
As Track Treasures Gift Shop Manager, London has been busy getting stocked up with a wide variety of items - t-shirts, hats, hoodies and hundreds of souvenirs - for the 2019 season opener of the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series on April 6.
The fourth-year employee said she's adding some specialty items this year, with a particular eye on the growing female clientele that attends events at the speedway.
"Event t-shirts always sell well and this year, we're having more women's t-shirts," London said. "Different colors and different styles. We're trying to appeal more to the women, getting away from the (traditional) blacks and grays."
London, a native of nearby Weaubleau, said other new items this year include a seven-flag set for kids and even a tote bag.
Of course, the traditional standbys such as the shirts and hats always are mainstays with fans of all ages, male or female. Hoodies are especially hot sellers early and late in the season, when the weather trends on the chilly side.
Offering top-quality merchandise is one of the reasons London enjoys her job. She became manager at the gift shop midway through last season, having worked at the front gate and the campground check-in gate prior to that.
"A friend of mine is good friends with (Lucas Oil Speedway Public Safety Director) Steve Harnden and had me fill out an application with Steve because she know I was looking for a part-time job," London said of how she first got hired at the speedway.
London now resides in Flemington, but also teaches special education and drives a school bus for Weaubleau R-III schools.
"So with my full-time job it can be challenging at times, but that's OK. I enjoy it," London said. Her daughter Riki (20) also works in the gift shop while daughter Krya (23) works in the Diamond Bar.
Karmin London says she was a race fan prior to being hired at the speedway and some friends think she gets to take in all the racing action now that she's based "on the top side" overlooking the front straightaway.
"That doesn't really happen," she said, laughing. "I can see them go about half-way around the track, sometimes."
The 2019 Lucas Oil Speedway season kicks off March 30 with an open test and tune. The Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series begins April 6 with action in all four of the weekly divisions - Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds, Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods, Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Models and O'Reilly Auto Parts Street Stocks.
