Wheatland, Missouri - An eventful weekend of Drag Boat racing wrapped up on Sunday evening at Lake Lucas. A few early morning rain showers pushed the starting time back, but did not damper the action on the liquid quarter mile. Final Elimination Rounds fired off all day in each class for the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series. Fans saw it all from side-by-side finishes, to run-a-way wins. Round after round, boats and pilots were knocked out of contention for the final passes of the day. Overall there were 13 different classes of boats and personal watercrafts represented throughout the event.
The fan favorite class, Top Fuel Hydro's were narrowed down to two familiar boats and pilots. The Problem Child, piloted by Daryl Ehrlich owned by Eddie Knox is based out of Round Rock, Texas. The Speed Sport Special, piloted by Jarrett Silvey and owned by Lou and Mary Ann Osmond races from St.Louis Missouri. The same match-up from previous events held on Lake Lucas. Silvey in the E3 Spark Plugs lane with Ehrlich in the Poly Lift Boat Lift Lane, fans were on their feet with camera's in hand for the big finale. Problem Child had a solid weekend with continual great passes and ended his weekend on a high note with the win. His top speed of the weekend came in a semi-final round at 254 MPH! Ehrlich took the win over Silvey with a 242 MPH pass in the finals.
Several exciting notes from the weekend include a father and son each winning their respective classes. Joey Mcintyre from Broken Bow, OK, picked up the win in the Top Eliminator Class with his son, Cole Mcintyre winning over Dylan Crownover in Personal Watercraft 2. Another duo, Dave Schmidt Jr. and his son Justin Schmidt of St. Louis, MO continued their family legacy of boat racing. Dave Schmidt Jr. fell to Jeff Lablanc from Norman, OK in the final Pro Eliminator Round and settled for a second place finish. Justin Schmidt recently turned 16 and used the weekend to earn his license with the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series. Justin met all the criteria to earn his boat pilot license and was able to log some time on Lake Lucas. Bill Miles from Imperial, MO won in the Modified Eliminator class and in the Pro Modified's Shawn Reed from Lake Tapps, WA took the top honors.
One interesting thing about Drag Boat racing, is the naming of boats. Pilots all have special names and usually interesting stories behind the names to go with them. One of the more popular boats, Dirty Duck is piloted by Slug Hefner from Poplar Bluff, MO. The Dirty Duck pit is often full of fans looking to purchase a t-shirt or get a quick photo with the boat. Slug was paired with Randy Benson from Mansfield, TX in the final round of Pro Outlaws. The Dirty Duck settled for second with Benson's pass at 162 MPH. In Personal Watercraft 1, Ryan O'Hara of Olathe, KS grabbed the win and dedicated it to his father, who was a racer himself and recently lost his battle with cancer. In the Quick Eliminator Class, Tommy Rice from Fort Worth, TX secured the win a quick reaction time over Todd Ebert. Ronald Jones from Lubbuck, TX set the pace in the River Racer category for a win at the second annual event. In the Stock Eliminator Class, Hoppy Harris claimed the title.
Tony Scarlatta nearly matched his own record with a pass during opening roundsSunday, but would catch fire in the semi-final's and miss the chance to break his own record. Bill Miller of Montgomery, TX secured the win over Brad Parrack in the Top Alcohol Flats. For Full bracket results click here to download. Andy Reynolds won in the Top Alcohol Hydro division with a bye in the final round. Congratulations to all of the weekend's winners.
